It’s Easy To Craft For A Cause

But first, a little back story.

When I first started Create To Donate, I was focused (some might call it stuck) on making things to donate to nonprofit and community organizations that serve a specific group of people.

I had a very limited idea of what crafting for a cause meant.

Over time, however, I have increased the scope of what I consider to be a “donation” because at the heart of it, a donation is a gift.

In fact, when I thought about it, the words “donation” and “gift” are often used interchangeably within the nonprofit and philanthropic world.

So when someone makes something as teacher gift, for example, that’s a DIY tutorial I should offer.

I always included nurses and health care providers by offering a variety of free scrub cap patterns. Now, I want to open up my DIY project potential to local libraries and librarians, first responders, etc.

It’s an exciting new phase because I have so many ideas. This “Ser Bilingüe Es Un Superpoder” custom throw pillow is just the beginning!

How To Make A Custom Throw Pillow

The materials for this DIY decor tutorial are minimal: cotton fabric, puff vinyl, fusible interfacing, and pillow stuffing (not pictured below).

The tools for this pillow are a little more involved, though.

To cut the puff HTV, you need a Silhouette Cameo or Cricut.

And, since the puff vinyl needs consistent pressure and heat, you need some form of not-an-iron heat press like a Cricut Easy Press or standard heat press

Once all that’s in place, this DIY project is very stratightforward and should take less than an hour depending your skill and comfort with these materials.

How To Make A Custom Throw Pillow

Yield: 1 pillow

A simple DIY throw pillow is a beginner sewing project that can be easily customized and makes a great gift for a vareity of people.

Materials

Two 16" x 16" pieces of cotton cabric of choice.
One 16" x 16" piece of fusible interacing
12" x 12" sheet of puff HTV
Polyfil pillow stuffing

Tools

Rotary cutter and mat
Sewing clips
Iron
SIlhouette Cameo or Cricut
Easy press or heat press
Teflon pressing sheet

Instructions

Cut two 16" x 16 squares of your cotton fabric. Ths can be two pieces of the same color, or two different colors or patterns. .
Iron the interfacing to the fabric you're goin to use for your front panel.
Clip the pieces of fabric right sides together to prepare for sewing.
Sew 3 edges of the fabric squares togther using 1/2" seam.
With the final edge, leave at least a 3" gap in the middle of the edge for turning and stuffing.
Trim the edges so that they can be pushed out easily once turned.
Turn th pillow right sides out. Press if it needs it.
Download Create to Donate's free PNG.
Cut a 12" x 12" sheet of puff HTV and cut out the deign using your Silhouette or Cricut.
Weed the puff vinyl.
Press the puff HTV onto the front panel of your pillow.
Admire how cool the puffy letters are.
Stuff the pillow with polyfil.
Stitch the hole closed using a ladder stitch.
Push the filling around the shape the pillow to your liking and enjoy!

Notes

I used corduroy as the back panel of the pillow to add some texture and color.
I used fusible interfacing for the front panel of the pillow so that it's keeps a crisp look when the puff vinyl is applied. Also since this pillow will be in a high school classroom, I wanted felt it would add some additional strength to something that will likely be handled a lot.
I used a 1/2" seam allowance because I was working with materials that had a different stretch so it's much more forgiving. It's also a great option for this beginner project to allow a new sewist some breathing room.
You can also sew the hole closed if you're in a rush. The hand stitching gives it the cleanest and most finished look though.
