Easy Craft Tutorial: DIY Washcloth Cupcake
This DIY washcloth cupcake is an easy craft tutorial perfect for a fun family activity.
I realize washcloth cupcakes and sock cupcakes, as well as diaper cakes, have been around for a while. I am just late to the party when it comes to making them.
This concept was reintroduced to me late last year when I was talking to one of the team members at Hospice of the Valley.

When sharing the list of handmade donations they accept, DIY washcloth cupcake was included in their list.
And it got me thinking about other ways these washcloth cupcakes could be donated or gifted.
The most obvious? As part of a NICU graduate gift basket you give to family and friends or donate to organizations that support families with preemies and babies in the NICU.
Be Creative With Your DIY Washcloth Cupcake
So once you have decided who should receive your gift or donation, it’s time to start thinking about how you’re going to create super cute washcloth cupcakes.
For adults and larger-sized cupcakes, you will want the washcloth to measure around 10″ x 10″.
For mini cupcakes, the baby-sized washcloths work well.
Washcloth Colors & Textures
There is no specific color you have to use when making a washcloth cupcake.
Using a white washcloth, however, give you a lot of options for decorations if you’re looking forward to adding some extra textures and colors to your aesthetic.
If you’re under a tight timeline, using washcloths in different colors is a great choice because it makes them pop.

Along with the option of washcloth color, you can use washcloth texture as part of your design.
Washcloth textures could include:
- terry cloth
- flannel
- microfiber
- muslin
Washcloth Cupcake Wrapper
The washcloth cupcake wrapper (aka muffin cups or cupcake liners) is an important part of your design.
In fact, I feel it’s one of the main selling points of the whole concept. Without a wrapper, the rolled washcloth won’t look like a cupcake.
Washcloth cupcake liners can be made out of any of the following:
- patterned paper – if you have a Silhouette or a Cricut, you can cut out a wrapper use cupcake wrapper SVG from Creative Fabrica* (affiliate link).
- felt – you can cut the felt to size based on the height and width of your rolled washcloth.
- silicone – silicone cupcake wrappers are fairly inexpensive and hold their shape very nicely. I have used these silicone muffin cups*
- pre-fab paper liners – you use colorful paper cupcake liners* or tulip-shaped parchment paper liners*.

Washcloth Cupcake Decorations

Washcloth cupcake decorations are another place where you can express your creativity.
Almost any material can be used to embellish the cupcake – beads, buttons, scraps of felt or fabric, and even tiny pom poms.
I also tested some toothpicks, cut in half, with washi tape wrapped around them to look like a little ball.
For the tutorial below, I decided to use colorful buttons because it’s easy to see them as sprinkles.
I will be donating these to an organization that serves seniors, therefore I wanted the decorations to be easy to understand and the beads weren’t as obvious.
