How To Make A Baby Burp Cloth {Free Pattern}

Why not make a baby burp cloth if you’ve already pulled the flannel from your stash to make NICU bonding hearts?

This is also an easy DIY baby shower gift if you know someone with a new arrival coming soon.

And while I do enjoy making custom burp cloths, we all know almost anything can be used as one.

So sometimes I’m perplexed by the fascination with burp cloths.

I mean, just throw something absorbent over your shoulder and voila! It’s a burp cloth.

There is something to be said for an aesthetic or theme, however.

Plus, flannel is soft on a baby’s face (because there will be lots of face wiping) and it’s easy to pack in almost any bag because it’s so thin.

OK, so now I’ve basically talked myself back into why making burp cloths is so cool and convenient.

So let’s make a flannel burp cloth with my free pattern.

Materials For A DIY Flannel Burp Cloth

The materials you need for this easy sewing tutorial are very straightforward but also give you some options depending on the heft you want the baby burp cloth to have.

Make a burp cloth with these basic materials and free burp cloth pattern.

For this easy DIY burp cloths, you need the following:

  • 1/2 yard of flannel in a fun print
  • 1/2 yard of flannel in a color pairs well with the print
  • 1/2 yard of quilt batting (optional)
  • package of bias tape (optional)

If you choose just to use the flannel, then you’ll have a thinner burp cloth and a different set of sewing steps.

For the purpose of this tutorial, I’m going to integrate both materials for a burp cloth that is quilted to give it some texture and dimension.

Notes

  • The quilt batting is optional if you just want to sew the two pieces of flannel right sides together, leave a turning hole, then turn right sides out and top stitch.
  • Bias binding isn't required but does add a little bit of weight to the overall feel of the baby burp cloth so that it lays nicely on a person's shoulder. It also makes it easier to finish when you include the quilt batting.
