This is part of a series of “Why I Give” interviews intended to demonstrate that we all have a cause that speaks to us and, no matter what we have, we can find some way to contribute. In the world of nonprofits, while monetary support is always needed, they also need our time and energy.
It’s also important to see the diversity in how people choose to give back, so I am hopeful that these first-person stories introduce you to opportunities you didn’t know existed and connect you to new concepts, new nonprofits, and wonderful new people.
It just takes one small action to have a ripple effect, and I want to make waves.
This week, I am so happy to introduce you to one of the Create To Donate Ambassadors, Sandi Schwartz. We connected after I commented on one of her wonderful Happy Science Mom blog posts and she immediately understood the value of my campaign and shared her thoughts in her post “How To Give Back Through Craft.”

Sandi’s Story Of Giving
Who do you support?
I support St. Baldrick’s Foundation which fills the funding gap in childhood cancer research.
Why do you support St. Baldrick’s Foundation?
My husband and I believe that there is nothing worse than a suffering child. St. Baldrick’s focuses on raising money to put towards pediatric cancer research. Science is critical to helping these children. We are so blessed with our children and want to help others less fortunate than us.
How do you support St. Baldrick’s Foundation?
So far we have given monetary donations to this charity. We have supported several of our friends and colleagues who have participated in shaving their heads for this cause. We hope to get more involved in the future.
How do you hope to make a difference through your support of St. Baldrick’s Foundation?
Now that we have two friends with children battling leukemia, this issue has become even closer to our hearts. We feel strongly that putting money towards research will help impact the greatest number of children so that better treatment can be developed and hopefully a cure can be discovered. We hope to be consistent supporters of this critical charity.
How else do you like to give back to the community?
We are also involved in several other charitable projects. Some entail giving monetary donations or items and others involved creative projects.
We decorated cards for veterans, donated clothing to children in need, entertained the elderly at holiday time, collected and built legos for an autistic school, made dog toys out of old t-shirts for rescued and abandoned animals. Most recently we baked cookies for community helpers in our town and had the privilege of meeting the Fire Chief when we delivered the box of cookies to acknowledge Patriot’s Day and remember 9/11.
We believe in teaching our children to give back to our community and to spread the love to a multitude of organizations.
