This is part of a series of “Why I Give” interviews intended to demonstrate that we all have a cause that speaks to us and, no matter what we have, we can find some way to contribute. In the world of nonprofits, while monetary support is always needed, they also need our time and energy.
It’s also important to see the diversity in how people choose to give back, so I am hopeful that these first-person stories introduce you to opportunities you didn’t know existed and connect you to new concepts, new nonprofits, and wonderful new people.
It just takes one small action to have a ripple effect, and I want to make waves.

Marina’s Story Of Giving
Who do you support?
I support Kiva and Save The Children. Kiva is an “international nonprofit, founded in 2005 and based in San Francisco, with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty.”
Save The Children “invests in childhood – every day, in times of crisis and for our future. In the United States and around the world, we give children a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm.”
Why do you support Kiva and Save The Children?
I love Kiva. What it stands for, and it’s not only that it is helping, but the people are responsible, they are truly working and then they give back the loan and I keep on re-lending. Plus, they do amazing 2 for 1 offers and that helps, even more people.
Save the Children is a total no brainer. How can we be hurting soooo many and such innocent, beautiful kids? Any way I can help, I try.
How do you support Kiva and Save The Children?
I donate regularly to Kiva and I donate once in a while to Save the Children. Since I live in Guatemala, I donate constantly to local organizations that are very similar.
How do you hope to make a difference through your support of Kiva and Save The Children?
In general, my donating to any organization is to help give others a chance. I am very blessed and fortunate, and I know it’s not all by my doing. So if I can help in anyway to get others into a situation that they can rise up, I want to do it. And in the meanwhile ease their way of living.
