DIY Preemie Halloween Bodysuit

This DIY Preemie Halloween bodysuit takes just minutes to make once you have the materials.

It’s as simple as grabbing a white preemie bodysuit and adding a fun DTF transfer design.

You can make one as a gift for a family member or friend, or to donate to events like “Boo in the NICU” that is hosted annually by the Preemies of the Carolinas.

A handful of bodysuits should take you less than 30 minutes to make.

Some Preemie Bodysuit Particulars

Before your start, however, there are some things you should know to make the process go smoothly.

Because when you make a bodysuit for a newborn or a toddler it’s pretty straightforward, but a preemie bodysuit requires a little extra know because of its size.

DIY Custom Preemie Bodysuit Placement

One of the more challenging parts of making a preemie bodysuit is the size of the design.

Three graphic sizes that work well are:

  • 3″ L x 2″ H
  • 3″ L x 3″ H
  • 3″ L x 4″ H

You will want to make sure that the design you choose fills the whole space within those dimensions.

So when you’re choosing graphics, you don’t want any significant white space around the edges to be part of the total dimensions of the design.

Where Can I Find Halloween Designs?

It’s easy to find graphics for your preemie Halloween bodysuit, but sometimes that can be overwhelming.

So I recommend one of the following two options: make your own design or use a graphic from Creative Fabrica.

DIY Designs

If you already have a stash of heat transfer vinyl you’re looking to use, you can always create a design of your own in Canva using a fun font and your favorite Halloween elements.

You could also create something in Silhouette Studio or Cricut design space.

Creative Fabrica

If you would prefer to have a full color design, I recommend finding and downloading graphics from a service like Creative Fabrica (affiliate link).

There are options for pretty much everyone – some humorous, some scary, some super cute.

So you are sure to have an easy time finding something you like to use for a preemie Halloween bodysuit.

In my case, I found both complete full-color designs to use as-is and a couple of Halloween graphic collections where I selected one image and added my own sayings in a font of my choice.

To use the designs you need to create a gang sheet and send it to a DTF Transfer printer.

If you need a good place to start, I have had really good experiences with DTF Dallas. (And as always, full disclosure: I am not an affiliate and do not earn any sort of commission for recommending them.)

So you’ll need to plan some lead time if you want to have your preemie Halloween bodysuits ready for a specific time frame.

  • Take extra care peeling the transfer sheet away from small designs with detailed elements.
  • Heat tape isn't required but some of smaller designs don't lay flat naturally so the tape keeps them secure.
