Sew For A Cause: The Sandpiper Project Summer Pillowcase Challenge

The Sandpiper Project Annual Sizzlin’ Summer Pillowcase Challenge Sew Along is the perfect project for people whose stash of fun cotton or flannel prints has been silently reminding them it’s time to be put to good use.

The Sandpiper Project Pillowcase Challenge Sew Along is a yearly event in August and September that asks for handmade pillowcases donations to give to children fighting cancer across the United States.

I mean, I don’t know about you, but pillowcases have been my stealth “go to” gift for kids of all ages for years now.

Why a “stealth” gift you ask?

Well, since handmade pillowcases aren’t as flashy or trendy as the latest and greatest toy or name-brand piece of clothing, some kids don’t quite understand the significance when they’re opening their gifts.

That is, until the super soft flannel or cotton print with their favorite animal or character is what greets them at bedtime.

Then all bets are off and many parents have to make sure to wash it quickly in order to put it right back on the pillow.

Some of the pillowcases I have sewn for kids over the years have even made their way into a suitcase destined for college.

What Is The Sandpiper Project Pillowcase Challenge Sew Along?

So imagine being a child facing cancer who is gifted a special handmade pillowcase. It is likely to provide not only a bit of everyday normalcy, but also a comfort item during treatment.

This is why events like this The Sandpiper Project Pillowcase Challenge Sew Along are so important.

It not only brings comfort to children fighting cancer, but also raises awareness.

The challenge is simple (and there are even some prizes!) and the pertinent details are below.

Pillowcase Challenge Sew Along Details

Each summer, starting the second week of July through September 30th (to coincide with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month) The Sandpiper Project asks for pillowcase donations to benefit two organizations:

  1. Ryan’s Case For Smiles – an organization started by a mom who wanted to bring color and joy into her son’s hospital room during his cancer treatments and rounds) and,
  2. Camp UKANDU Family Camp – a family camp for children just finishing or currently in cancer treatment and their family fully provided for, free of charge, with doctors and nurses as camp advisors, counselors and staff using their vacation time to serve all to let kids be kids again.

Pillowcase Challenge Sew Along Prizes

As a token of appreciation, a member of The Sandpiper Project kindly sponsors an award that is given to the top three people who sew the most pillowcases.

The Pillowcase Challenge Sew Along prizes are an Amazon gift card in the amount of $50, $50, and $25.

Last year The Sandpiper Project delivered nearly 700 handmade pillowcases!

This year, they would like to more than double that amount and have a goal of 1500.

Where Do I send My Handmade Pillowcases?

So whether you can sew just a couple of pillowcases or a dozen (or more!) every handmade pillowcase brings The Sandpiper Project closer to their goal of 1500 pillowcases.

Once you’re ready to pack them up and send them off, you can mail them to:

Wish Ambassador Liz Arnold
The Sandpiper Project
3650 NW Witham Hill Drive
Corvallis, Oregon 97330

Please make sure to send all pillowcases before October 15, 2026.

How Else Can I Support This Event?

If you don’t have fabrics you feel are appropriate for children’s pillowcases, The Sandpiper Project has a great alternative.

Since they have had quality cotton fabrics donated to them to support their mission, volunteers prepared ready-to-sew pillowcase kits that even include a pattern to make it easy for you.

Pillowcase kits prepared by The Sandpiper Project put together in plastic bags ready to be sent to people requesting them.

All of the proceeds from these kits go directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities and are offered in two options:

  1. Five (5) pre-cut pillowcase fabric with pattern kits for $25, or
  2. Seven (7) pre-cut pillowcase fabric with pattern kits for $35.

If you feel a pillowcase kit is best for you please contact The Sandpiper Project by messaging them through their Facebook page  or sending them an email.

Sweet Dreams Start With A Handmade Pillowcase

Pillowcases may seem like a basic linen, but they can easily become a keepsake item when the handmade pillowcase is presented as a gift to a child fighting cancer.

So, if you are able, please support The Sandpiper Project and join their pillowcase challenge so they can surpass their goal this year and beyond.
